Saudi Arabia : Jeddah jewellery souks attract Haj pilgrims January 8, 2007 | | Majority of shopping malls, supermarkets and souks in Jeddah are attracting large number of Haj pilgrims. They have been flocking to nearly all outlets.
Shopkeepers opined that pilgrims are asking for rich as well as unique jewellery, carpets and readymade garments. They are coming from new regions like Africa and the Middle East.
Pilgrims crowded gold stores in the southern district, famous for its traditional souks, and haggled for gift items. Kandara district’s chief gold souk received heavy response from them.
They also visited Heraa Shopping Center, Jamjoom Center, International Market, Makarona and Bawadi souks.
Many pilgrims wanted to pay through credit card this time, which amused store owners since few outlets have facilities for accepting credit card payment.
Storekeepers seemed to be satisfied with last two days’ business. In order to encourage pilgrims to shop, souks are being decorated with lights. | | |
