Tommy Hilfiger takes NYFW island-hopping

American designer Tommy Hilfiger took the New York Fashion Week crowd on a mini vacation earlier this week for his spring-summer 2016 collection.

Inspired by Jamaica and the small private island of Mustique, which is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, the collection pays homage to the ease of island life, where classic silhouettes are invigorated through an eclectic filter.

The collection showcased billowing dresses sport lush flora and fauna patterns, tropical hued patchwork and vibrant stripes and denim jackets and faded chinos with beaded tapes and whipstitched borders. Hlfiger also reinvented the traditional cricket sweater in homespun crochet while polos were done in netted mesh, and oxford shirts were personalized with embroidered eyelet.

Jacquard suiting woven with metallic threads designed to catch the light, and silk caftans with a decadent sense of ease were also part of the collection in a throwback to the eccentric holiday style of eminent Britons who frequented the islands in the early 1970s. (SH)
