'IFD will be among top 3 fashion weeks' - Mr Tanriverdi
July 04, 2009 (Turkey)

The Chairman of Istanbul Ready-Wear and Apparel Exporters Association (IHKIB), Mr. Hikmet Tanriverdi is aiming to make Istanbul Fashion Days (IFD) one among the three topmost fashion weeks in the world by the year 2023.

Istanbul Fashion Days will be held during August 26-29 in Istanbul with the cooperation of ITKIB and the Fashion Designers Association (MTD). Speaking at the promotion ceremony of forthcoming IFD event, Mr. Tanriverdi noted that the organization offers an opportunity to bring the ready-wear sector and fashion designers together on a single platform.

IFD will be held at Taskisla campus of Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in which 24 fashion shows will be conducted within three days. Presence of about 15,000 people is being expected for this event.

He further informed that the location for this event has been chosen purposely to blend aura of a classic architecture with that of most modern fashion. He also mentioned that now onwards, IFD will be organized twice in a year

Currently, 130 similar fashion weeks are being organized worldwide. Tanriverdi believes that by the year 2023, IFD will stand different from the cluster of these 130 fashion weeks and will go on to be one of the top three fashion events, beating all its rivals.

The Chairman further claimed that the Turkish Fashion Industry will become an esteemed competitor in this field with its dynamism and the strength of the textile and readymade garment sectors.

Turkey intends to attain exports of $500 billion by 2023, which is the diamond jubilee year of the Turkish Republic. The textile and the ready-wear sector will achieve one-fifth of this figure, he said.

He further added that textile business of the country will have to be maintained by depending on its unique garment collection and skilled team of fashion designers and not on traditional contract manufacturing.

As per the Chairman, the countries which have their own distinct styles and brands, such as Italy, Portugal and Spain are the rivals of Turkish Fashion Industry.
