The fashion industry heavyweights like Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein capped off the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week New York, the eight-day-long American fashion fest which showcased Spring/Summer 2015 collections from about 200 designers.

The 74-year-old design veteran Ralph Lauren started his show with a line of desert travellers-inspired khaki ensembles like safari jackets, cargo pants, combat trousers, asymmetric satin tops, bombers, silk shirts, camel-coloured boiler suits and nipped at the waist orange shirt-dresses.

After the safari-inspired pieces, the American designer sent his yards of tulle, chiffon, silk and taffeta layered eveningwear down the runway. Enhanced with glittering crystals and sleek and modern shapes, the standouts were a light green gown that resembled a safari jacket on top and a billowing skirt on bottom, a shimmering sheath, cinched at waist trouser suits and sequinned gowns.

The American fashion house Calvin Klein, under the guidance of its womenswear section’s creative director of Brazilian dissent Francisco Costa, celebrated the female form through its recent catwalk collection. Decorated with patchwork and silver metallic embroidery, the featured sophisticated pieces were white sleeveless fluid dresses, fluted skirts, knits, tank tops and red and blue leatherwear.

Designer Marc Jacobs sent his models in military-inspired looks. Based in shades of olive green, khaki and marine blue, the line included cropped pants, short, suits, slouchy bottoms, jumpsuits, lightweight long sleeve short-collared dresses, grey and taupe pleated long collar pieces and some large pocket attached frocks.

Gilles Mendel, the creative director of the international French atelier J.Mendel, drew inspiration from the multi-windowed building paintings of Puerto Rican-born artist Enoc Perez for his latest presentation. Mixing bold solids and contrasting colours, the textured lightweight dresses were accentuated with sheer and organza panels, draped bodices and kimono sleeves in hues of shocking green, sky blue and electric pink.
