Marimekko to dress up Helsinki city centre

Marimekko will open its third company-owned retail store in Helsinki city centre on 12 November 2011. The new store, which will be on Uudenmaankatu, differs in an interesting way from all the other Marimekko stores. The constantly varying range will focus on spearhead products and experimental launches.

The location of the store, a few blocks from the busiest shopping streets, has been carefully thought out. The district features a number of small fashion and design boutiques as well as pleasant restaurants and cafes, and in character it is reminiscent of the famous design and fashion centre Mitte in Berlin.

“It's great that we now have this exciting store in Helsinki, Marimekko's home town. It's a place where we can try out new things and which challenges us to break established norms in our line of business. The store stands for the special features of our design. It offers glimpses of something new and unique – the exquisite items in the carefully planned range are spearhead products from our collections, prototypes, and sneak peeks of pre-launch items.

We mulled over the location for a long time and decided on this one because we have excellent experiences of our Berlin store in a similar location in Mitte, which is noted as a centre for trailblazing design and fashion. I think this place means a refreshing opportunity to be more spontaneous and to do things in unaccustomed ways”, says Creative Director Minna Kemell-Kutvonen.

New Marimekko stores were also opened in Espoo, Vantaa and Lahti during late October-early November. The stores in Vantaa and Espoo are company-owned, and they are based on the same concept as the several stores recently opened outside Finland.

In the light and colourful stores, particular attention is paid to inspiring and cosy atmosphere and memorable in-store customer experience. The Marimekko store opened in Lahti is retailer-owned and provides customers with all the treasures of the Marimekko world from new items to popular classics. Marimekko already has a store of its own in Lahti city centre.

Marimekko is a Finnish textile and clothing design company renowned for its original prints and colours. The company designs and manufactures high-quality interior decoration items ranging from furnishing fabrics to tableware as well as clothing, bags and other accessories.
