Tubeknit Fashions picks Donna Karan order to supply t-shirts

Polo T-shirts being packed into neat polythene packets sport an astounding price tag of $29.50.

Tirupur, workers in factories of Tubeknit Fashions are working to finish a contract from Donna Karan — its first from a top-notch American label.

The contract size is huge close to 70,000 T-shirts over next two months.

Export quota regime severely limited ambition and most exporters like Tubeknit used to focus on Europe. Orders from the European labels were small and margins wafer thin, but it kept them in business over 3 decades.

Until recently, Americans preferred to do business with China because textile factories there had large capacities that can easily handle high volume orders.

Leading Tirupur factories are beginning to scale up capacities to deal with high volume business from America.

European labels gave 10 to 15 percent margins above production cost.

The Americans are ready to give us up to 25 percent, said P. Parthasarathi, Founder and Managing Director of Tubeknit Fashions, one of the top five knitwear exporters of Tirupur.

Tubeknit makes the DKNY T-shirts for just $4 each and sells them for about $5.

Tubeknit's turnover swelled almost 30 percent to Rs 155 crore during the year ended March 31.

In 2005, it reported a turnover of Rs 122.35 crore and a net profit of Rs 2.31 crore.
