Patagonia unveils temperature regulating Nano-Air jacket

For Fall 2014, apparel retailer Patagonia unveiled an entirely new kind of insulating garment, the Nano-Air jacket which offers excellent temperature regulation, besides four-way mechanical stretch.
Patagonia said the Nano-Air jacket can be worn continuously during aerobic, stop-start activities in the mountains, and mitigates the need to adjust layers when the body heats up.
The jacket's nylon face fabric has a DWR finish to repel precipitation, making it an ideal outer layer or mid layer.
Patagonia said the Nano-Air products are incredibly breathable, allowing airflow up to 40 cubic feet per minute (CFM) while still maintaining stretch and warmth, due to the exclusive combination of ‘FullRange’ insulation and nylon fabric.
‘FullRange’ insulation is a multi-denier synthetic fill insulation made from several different types of polyester fibers, developed by Toray Mills in Japan.
It's built in much the same way as traditional fill insulation, but has a proprietary element that gives it added stability against fiber migration, and allows for great stretch and recovery.
Nano-Air garments use a 60-gram insulation weight for versatility in a wider range of temperatures. Utilizing a blend of hydrophobic fibers that repel moisture, ‘FullRange’ insulation will maintain its warmth and loft when wet, and dries fast.
“As soon as we started field testing the Nano-Air Hoody, I knew we had something special on our hands, and lab testing confirmed it,” said Jenna Johnson, Patagonia’s business unit director for alpine.
“We’ve created an entirely new category of synthetic insulation with the Nano-Air products. The feedback we’ve received from our ambassadors has been incredible – you put it on and leave it on.”, she added.
“This piece has changed the way I think about dressing for the mountains,” notes Mikey Schaffer, Patagonia climbing ambassador.
He continued, “With previous insulated jackets, I’d constantly be putting the jacket on at a belay and then taking it off before I started climbing. None of that is necessary with the Nano-Air Jacket. Having such a breathable jacket nearly eliminates the chills you get after sweating hard”. (AR)
