Nike Canada, Toronto Mayor David Miller, and world class Canadian hurdler Perdita Felicien officially today opened the new Nike Malvern Sports Complex in Scarborough, Ontario.

The multi-pad (soccer, basketball and track) sports facility is the largest of its kind in the world and is made from recycled shoe material, called Nike Grind, from approx. 50,000 running shoes donated by Toronto residents and other Canadians during last summer's Nike RUNTO.

"Today's official opening demonstrates the value of partnerships and how they can benefit everyone who lives and works in our communities," said Mayor David Miller. "Through the development of facilities such as the Nike Malvern Sports Complex, we are creating opportunities to engage youth in sports and activities that set the foundation for healthy and successful lives."

A partnership between the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation and Nike Canada, the new facility was built on behalf of all RUNTO participants who donated their previously worn running shoes.

Nike Canada used the shoes to help build an athletic complex in a community that the City identified was in need of sports facilities. The facility benefits both the community and the environment as thousands of pairs of old running shoes were diverted from landfill to produce the surfaces for the new sports complex.

"This Nike Grind Complex gives youth from the Malvern community access to high performance sports surfaces, which helps young athletes improve," said Olympic hurdler Perdita Felicien "I'm sure we'll see many more Olympians from this area in years to come."
