Sportsmen can now protect skin with UV rays blocking apparels

The sun is both your greatest friend and a dire enemy. There wouldn't be life on Earth without it, but too much sunlight damages skin and increases the risk of cancer. As health concerns rise, use of sunscreen and hats increase. But what about the clothes you wear? Most people don't realize they can receive sun damage through their clothing. If you can see light though a fabric, UV rays can get through as well.

That's where UPF comes in, the Ultraviolet Protection Factor. “UPF” is the term used to describe the ultraviolet protection offered by fabrics and is based on a scale of 15 to 50+. Apparel with a UPF rating blocks both UV/A (aging) and UV/B (burning) radiation. UPF 30 means the fabric allows 1/30th of UV light to pass through.

The Wacoal Sports Science Corporation, makers of CW-X Conditioning Wear, is one company that takes sun protection seriously. They have developed several lines of sun-blocking performance apparel with integrated titanium oxide fiber technology to protect sports enthusiasts who play outdoors from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

The CW-X LiteFit, VersatX and Insulator lines of tops and tights for men and women feature a UPF 50+ rating, the highest possible. Summer weight CW-X tights and tops made from CoolMax have a UPF rating of 40+. In fact, every CW-X garment has at least a UPF of 40+. It's a passive form of sunscreen you never have to think about – you are automatically protected whenever you get dressed.

LiteFit tops are made from four-way stretch Healtha+ fabric, which, in addition to blocking the sun, is moisture-wicking and anti-bacterial. It's so light, a men's large is just four ounces; the women's sleeveless top weighs in at a mere 2.5 ounces. LiteFit is available in many styles and colors.

CW-X VersatX tights and tops are made from Dry-Zone R506 fabric which offers quick-dry moisture wicking and UV protection. It features fiber nanotechnology incorporating antibacterial silver dioxide for antibacterial freshness and titanium oxide for UPF 50+ protection. VersatX Tights also feature a new version of the company's patented Conditioning Web in the core area to support the lower abdominals, hip flexors and gluteal muscles .

CW-X applies the principles of kinesiology – the study of human movement – to create a line of athletic wear which functions in concert with the body. Built-in patented Conditioning Web technology supports joints and muscles at critical points to enhance performance and help prevent injury and improve athletic performance.

The CW-X brand is the world's first truly anatomically engineered high performance sports apparel. Wacoal Sports Science has been issued patents for CW-X technology in Japan and Europe, with 15 patents in the U.S. alone.

The product is endorsed by USA Luge, the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation, world-class master sprinters, adventure racing teams, mountain climbers, ultra distance racers, and the CW-X Sports Medicine Advisory Board.
