David Lynch inspires Givenchy to create men's collection

Givenchy Fall/Winter 2008 Men's Ready-to-Wear and Accessories Collection explores a certain idea of cinematic elegance: knowingly cultivated nonchalance, relaxed formality, classicism with a bohemian twist.

Drawing inspiration from David Lynch circa 1990, this modern vision of masculinity uses soft shoulders, draped trousers and washed fabrics to take the strictness out of tailoring, and fuses elements of the great outdoors – shearling, nautical stripes and the season's standout lumberjack check – into a collection designed for urban living. The new, softer shape is defined by draped trousers, pulled in below the waist by braided leather or simple string belts, and tapering to a narrow, rolled-up ankle.

Rugged in honey-coloured corduroy, they take on a less casual feel in wool, sometimes discreetly patterned with small checks or chalk stripes. Other classic masculine motifs crop up throughout the collection, from – at the formal end of the scale – a dark Prince of Wales check on a tailored double-breasted coat with wide lapels to – at the relaxed end – an outsize lumberjack check in graphic black and white on a shirt or jacket.

Apart from chalky white, the season's colour palette is sombre and restrained, following a dusky spectrum from black and grey to navy and brown. Textures are matte, washed or waxed to create an easy, worn-in effect: striped wool sweaters look loose and comfortable, gingham check shirts are slightly crumpled, and even one of the collection's key pieces, a button-up blouson in super-luxe snakeskin, has been washed to remove the lustre from the leather.

In keeping with the nonchalant allure of the collection, the classic two-piece suit is often broken up and trousers worn with, for example, a buttonless shirt, a subtly mismatched jacket, or a short pea jacket.

Shearling also features strongly, both as trim on the lapels of a leather biker jacket or the collar of a chunky-zippered cardigan. Last but not least, a three-quarter length rabbit fur coat offers an equally warm but more bohemian option.

The season's sophisticated casual mood is also evident in the accessories. Lace-up shoes in smooth leather or velvety nubuck sport contrasting sturdy crepe soles, while Givenchy's iconic Nightingale bag is reinterpreted for men as a roomy 24-hour style. It features a zippered bottom, two handles and a shoulder strap, and comes in creased washed black leather or rich chocolate suede.

The Givenchy Men's Ready-to-Wear and Accessories Collections for F/W 2008 are available at select Rodeo Drive outlets in the UAE.
