One of the largest exporters of knitted garments, the Ludhiana based Rs. 240 crores Venus Group of Companies, is poised to launch its own brand of garments in the domestic market.

To be named UV&W, the brand will cater to men, ladies, kids and infants. The company will launch its exclusive stores in Punjab and Haryana before spreading out in the rest of the country. The first few stores will be owned and operated directly by the company. At a later stage, it may also get into franchise and multi-brand outlet model. The company would also be selling its products online through its website.

Chairman of the Group, Mr. Anil Jain, told media persons at a news conference here on Friday that the first three stores will be opened simultaneously in Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar on October 26, followed by showrooms in Chandigarh, Ambala, and Patiala.

The product line will include innerwear, thermals, sweatshirts, jogging suits, knit pants, cotton sweaters, and loungewear. The USP of UV&W will be high quality certified organic cotton garments. No other retail brand has taken the initiative to exclusively market organic garments, which creates a distinct niche for UV&W.

Even with organic cotton yarn prices being approximately 40% higher than the regular cotton and other higher priced inputs, this brand would be reasonably priced. Mr. Jain, with his brothers, was involved in establishing their first domestic brand Duke in the 70's. This experience of selling quality products at an economical price will help Mr. Jain make UV&W another remarkable success.

With strong list of export-clients, like Gap, Wal-Mart, Carrefour, Hudson Bay, Sam's Club, Jean Fritz, The Children's Place, etc, manufacturing and selling high quality product will not be a problem at all. Commenting on that, Mr. Jain said “The quality of garments that we are going to sell in our retail stores would be the same as what we have been exporting to our clients. We are going to follow international quality parameters and lab tests for the products to be sold at our outlets. These would be the same, or even better, than what we are already exporting.”

Organic Cotton can be of tremendous benefit to an individual, society as a whole, and the environment. Commercial cotton production makes heavy use of toxic chemicals. These chemicals and pesticides sprayed on cotton fields go directly into the soil, water and air, which may cause various diseases, infertility, and even cancer. Besides that, these pesticides have been known to have a dangerous affect on insect and animals.

Grown without the use of any synthetic pesticides and chemicals, organic cotton cultivation leaves no toxic residues. This natural form of cotton is processed into the most safe and skin friendly garment. “With increasing social-awareness, people are understanding their responsibilities. More and more people are opting for products that are eco-friendly.

Our products are for people who are not just fashion and quality conscious, but also care equally about their wellbeing. We have put in a lot of effort to make our garments skin-friendly, and we can confidently say that our products are safe - even for infants. And what is safe for infants is definitely safe for everyone” said Mr. Jain. All garments would be up to Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) and Organic Exchange standards. The certification has been done by the Control Union from The Netherlands.
