Intertek conducted a seminar on “Safety Aspects in Children's Clothing” at the Golden Jubilee edition of the National Garment Fair (NGF) in Mumbai on July 16, 2009. The annual fair held at the 'Bombay Exhibition Centre' from July 15-July 17 is expected to see a participation from about 350 leading garment/accessories manufacturers and brands as exhibitors and about 20,000 retailers, distributors, agents and supply chain members as trade visitors from all over India.

This exclusive seminar aimed at educating the industry on the need to upgrade and implement product quality and safety measures to counter competition and also provide customers with valuable information on new juvenile product safety regulations and compliance requirements. The seminar was attended by children's garment manufacturers, retailers and lifestyle brands, which constitute some of the largest segments of domestic apparel trade.

Over the years, the textile sector has seen tremendous growth and will continue to grow by 12% to 15% annually at manufacturing, brand and retail levels. Safety in children's clothing has become a very important and sensitive subject across all developed countries including India as well. Easy access to information and global market exposure has led to increased awareness on the aspect of child safety amongst Indian parents, making them more conscious about the clothes their children wear.

As global legislation on product safety, environmental, ethical, and trade security issues have gained importance in the current scenario, Intertek offers compliance expertise for textile and apparel retailers, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors ranging from restricted hazardous substance management to strategic supply chain security programs.

“With consumer protection norms becoming more stringent, Indian consumers are becoming more brand conscious and demand greater quality."

"Clothing and lifestyle manufacturers, brands and retailers need to adhere to the set norms for consumer safety. We are happy to see that initiatives like 'National Garment Fair' seek to address such issues and provide a platform to create awareness on Safety Features on Children's Clothing.” said Mr. Dilip Gianchnadani, Regional Director, Intertek Consumer Goods. “We at Intertek provide quality assurance, textile testing and consultancy services for the textile sector to help manufacturers improve their performance and mitigates risks”, he added.

Intertek is a global leader in textile and garment testing for dimensional stability, care & fiber label recommendations, flammability testing, chemical analysis, color fastness, physical evaluation and more. The company also offers a variety of auditing services for supplier selection processes based on quality management systems, process controls, production capabilities and crisis management.
