| Eco-friendly handicrafts to create niche markets | | November 07, 2009 (India) |  |
 The traditional artists of India will now manufacture eco-friendly products as they have been imparted education, to use reusable and waste materials to produce handicrafts, by the NGOs such as Handloom And Handicrafts Today (HAST) Karigar Society, which has conducted an exhibition of 35 product lines from 16 various States, in Chennai.
These handicraft artisans have been trying to attract urban consumers towards their products and create a niche for handicrafts in urban markets.
Secretary of HAST Karigar Society, Ms. Sharmistha Lahiri said that the artisans use vegetable colours for block printing on products such as jewels and slippers made of jute, as well as produce other fancy items utilizing renewable and eco-friendly raw materials.
Ms. Lahiri said that these handicraft products, which have a wide contribution in preserving country’s tradition and generating income for economically backward communities, will now enjoy a new tagline.
The State government of Tamil Nadu put emphasis on producing handicrafts made of renewable products, for instance, manufacturing lamps using re-melted brass scraps and making paper dolls by mixing waste papers with chalk powder, said the sales manager of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd (Poompuhar), Mr. Gopalakrishnan.
Several workshops for artisans have also been conducted by the Madras Craft Foundation since long at the DakshinaChitra, to produce handicrafts made of renewable and waste products.
President of this Foundation Mr. Deborah Thiagarajan said that the production of eco-friendly handicrafts will accelerate gradually, as the manufacturing of eco-products is new for the workers.
