A powerloom unit with 11 looms was recently inaugurated in Imphal’s industrial estate Takyelpat by Thongam Biswajit, textile, commerce and industries minister of India’s north-eastern state Manipur. Despite concerns over the survival of traditional handloom, the introduction of the powerloom unit will increase production and raise weaver’s income, he said.
He suggested that traditional handloom weavers can be protected by exclusively reserving production of certain items by them, according to a report in an English-language daily in north-east India.
