Uzbek textile output increases 12.1% in Q1 2014

The production of textiles, excluding garments, in Uzbekistan increased by 12.1 percent year-on-year to 2.143 trillion soms in the first quarter of 2014, according to the data released by The State Committee of Uzbekistan on Statistics, reports UzDaily.
 
The report says that enterprises in the light industry (which includes textiles, garments and other industries) produced goods worth 2.739 trillion soms in January-March 2014 period, which is an increase of 11.8 percent year-on-year.
 
The light industry accounted for 16.8 percent of the total production volume of Uzbekistan during the three-month period, which was 0.1 percent higher than the 16.7 percent share recorded during the same period last year.
 
Among the various sub-sectors of the light industry, the highest production was registered by the textile sector, which produced goods worth 2.143 trillion soms, showing an increase of 12.1 percent year-on-year, followed by the garment industry which produced goods valued at 342.2 billion soms, up 9.8 percent year-on-year.
 
During the quarter, ginneries in Uzbekistan processed 399,700 tons of cotton, achieving a year-on-year growth of six percent.
 
The production of cotton yarn increased by 8.8 percent year-on-year, knitted or crocheted (excluding pile and terry) fabric by 12 percent, and of cotton fabrics (containing 85 percent or more cotton by weight) by 13.8 percent.
 
In 2013, the Uzbek light industry production increased by 13.2 percent year-on-year to 7.955 trillion soms, of which the textile sector production rose by 11.2 percent to 6.68 trillion soms, while the garment sector output grew by 23.8 percent to 718.1 billion soms.
 
Uzbekyengilsanoat—the State Joint-Stock Company of Uzbekistan, represents the light industry of the country, and covers over 300 enterprises operating in cotton yarn, fabrics, hosiery, sewing, knitwear and other sub-sectors. Almost half of these firms have been set up as joint ventures with foreign investors.
