Excellence awards for Small Scale Industries
September 15, 2009 (Nepal)

Much-awaited Small Entrepreneur Excellence (SEE) Awards have been instituted by SMElink Project by PlaNet Finance in association with local project partners including Federation of Women Entrepreneurs’ Association of Nepal (FWEAN) and Federation of Handicrafts Association of Nepal (FHAN).

Cottage and Small Scale Industries should have easy market access at both, domestic as well as international levels, said Ms. Pramila Rijal, President of FWEAN at the award announcement program. There are nearly 5 lakh women entrepreneurs engaged in Cottage and Small Scale Industries across the country, she said.

SMElink is designed in a manner to promote small scale industries at higher levels, said FHAN President, Mr. Pushkar Man Shakya while speaking in the program. There is a scope to double the export volume of Nepal, though it is satisfactory as of date. To improve this export volume country needs economic diplomacy, said Mr. Shakya.

He further informed about upcoming handicrafts event, ‘The Eighth Handicraft Trade Fair and Sixth Craft Competition’, which will be organized by FHAN in co-operation with PlaNet Finance during 5th and 8th November.

SMElink project, a three-project program, is funded by the European Commission in its Asia Invest budget line that started in September 2007. This project aims at developing marketability and competitiveness of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) of Nepal.

This is to improve the export capacity of SMEs in the European markets, initially in the sectors of Jewelry & Metal-craft, Pashmina and Tourism.
