Bangladesh apparel exports down 5.53% in July-Feb FY20

Readymade garment exports from Bangladesh decreased by 5.53 per cent in the first eight months of current fiscal 2019-20 to $21.847 billion compared to exports of $23.126 billion in the corresponding months of the previous year, according to data from the Export Promotion Bureau. The percentage decrease in garment exports during July- February 2019-20 was greater than 4.79 per cent decline in overall exports from Bangladesh during the same period.

Category-wise, knitwear exports fell 5.17 per cent to $10.898 billion in the first eight months of fiscal 2019-20, as against exports of $11.493 billion during the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, as per the data.

Likewise, exports of woven apparel decreased 5.88 per cent to $10.948 billion during the period under review, compared to exports of $11.633 billion during July-February 2019-20.

Woven and knitted apparel and clothing accessories’ exports together accounted for 83.25 per cent of $26.241 billion worth of total exports made by Bangladesh during the July-February period.

In the last fiscal ending June 30, 2019, garment exports from Bangladesh crossed the $34-billion mark.

Meanwhile, home textile exports (Chapter 63) declined 7.47 per cent to $526.08 million during the eight-month period under review, compared to exports of $568.55 million during the comparable period of the previous fiscal.
