Japan's clothing imports down 6.2% in 2019-20

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories decreased by 6.2 per cent year-on-year to 3,122.218 billion yen ($29.10 billion) in fiscal year 2019-20 that ended on March 31. Of this, 92.18 per cent or 2,878.096 billion yen ($26.82 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 1,707.283 billion yen ($15.91 billion), a decrease of 11.8 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During April-March 2019-20, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 176.883 billion yen ($1.65 billion) from the EU, down 0.4 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 12.601 billion yen ($117.44 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 5.5 per cent.

Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics also fell 5.2 per cent year-on-year to 926.455 billion yen ($8.63 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 818.576 billion yen ($7.63 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 492.633 billion yen ($4.59 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 211.763 billion yen ($1.97 billion).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 64.982 billion yen ($605.62 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 24.938 billion yen ($232.42 million), during the year.
