Japan's clothing imports up 3.7% in 2017

Japan’s imports of clothing and accessories increased by 3.7 per cent year-on-year to 3,108.184 billion yen ($28.50 billion) in the calendar year 2017. Of this, 92.93 per cent or 2,888.525 billion yen ($26.49 billion) worth of goods were imported from Asia, according to trade statistics from the ministry of finance.

Among the Asian countries, imports from China stood at 1,940.397 billion yen ($17.79 billion), an increase of 1.7 per cent year-on-year, the data showed.

During January-December 2017, Japan imported apparel and accessories worth 160.376 billion yen ($1.47 billion) from the EU, up 2.5 per cent year-on-year. The Far Eastern country also imported 13.746 billion yen ($126.05 million) worth of clothing and accessories from the US, down 5.1 per cent.

Meanwhile, the value of Japan’s import of textile yarn and fabrics increased 5.8 per cent year-on-year to 925.197 billion yen ($8.48 billion) during the period under review. A bulk of these imports valued at 822.417 billion yen ($7.54 billion) were supplied by the countries in the Asian region, with China alone accounting for 514.711 billion yen ($4.72 billion), while imports from Asean nations stood at 190.965 billion yen ($1.75 billion).

Japan imported yarn and fabric worth 62.247 billion yen ($570.80 million) from the EU countries, whereas its imports from the US were valued at 24.492 billion yen ($224.59 million), during the year. (RKS)
