B'desh overtakes China in exports of sweaters to France

Bangladesh replaced China as the largest supplier of stretched cotton sweaters to France in 2011.

The Bangladeshi share of overall French stretched sweater imports stood at 28 percent, followed by China with 13 percent; Turkey 12 percent and India was in fourth place with 11 percent.

This was revealed in a report released by the French Textile Association. The report further informs that share of Chinese clothing imports is falling for various categories.

The main reason is the hike in wages, the report says. Against a Bangladeshi garment worker earning around €80 per month, a Chinese worker draws a salary between €200-300 per month.

In addition, with the increase of domestic demand in China, many Chinese exporters are forgoing smaller overseas orders in favour of supplying to the local markets.
