Jordan's clothing exports rise in Jan-April'14

The exports of apparel and clothing accessories from Jordan continued to show upward trend during the first four months of 2014, according to the data released by the Jordanian Department of Statistics.

From January to April 2014, Jordan exported garments and clothing accessories worth 260.865 million dinars (US$ 368.06 million), registering an increase of 11.05 percent over exports of 234.903 million dinars made during the corresponding period of last year.

Of this, knitted or crocheted apparel and clothing accessories’ exports earned 246.303 million dinars, showing a jump of 11.82 percent over exports totaling 220.254 million dinars made during the same period in 2013.

However, exports of non-knitted garments decreased marginally by 0.59 percent year-on-year and contributed 14.561 million dinars during the period under review.

In April 2014, Jordan’s exports of garments and accessories grew by 3.74 percent to 62.854 million dinars, compared to exports of 60.585 million dinars achieved in the same month last year.

Of this, exports of knitted apparel and accessories increased by 4.17 percent to 59.267 million dinars, as against exports of 56.894 million dinars made in the corresponding month of last year.

In 2013, Jordan’s garment and accessories exports rose by 9.79 percent to 809.705 million dinars over exports of 737.483 million dinars made in the previous year.

Last year, Jordan’s textile and clothing imports jumped by 18.12 percent to 895.428 million dinars, as against imports of 758.029 million dinars made in the previous year. Of this, imports of knitted or crocheted fabric were valued at 285.836 million dinars.

The textile and clothing sector in Jordan employs about 40,000 people, according to the Jordanian Society for the Export of Clothes and Textiles.
