US envoy to Bangladesh, Den Mozena is optimistic of Bangladesh regaining GSP facility in its exports to the US.

He however maintained that regaining the GSP was totally dependent on the status of implementation of the road map to improve safety in Bangladeshi garment factories.

It may be recalled that Bangladesh exports to the US lost its GSP facility, following the Rana Plaza tragedy in which many workers lives were lost.

Speaking at a roundtable meeting the envoy said, “The decision to revive the GSP status would be taken after reviewing the action plan of Bangladesh at a meeting to be held in Brussels.”

Mr. Mozena, however, had a high opinion about the clothing sector in Bangladesh and said the country could be a top exporter if it could maintain global standards.

He called Bangladesh an Asian Tiger, but also stressed on the importance of improving and developing the infrastructure of the country at a fast pace.

The Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) organized the roundtable meeting, which was also attended by the President of American Chamber of Bangladesh - Aftabul Islam. (AR)
