The government of West Bengal, a state in the eastern part of India, held discussion with stakeholders of the jute industry to understand and address the problems faced by them, Business Standard reports quoting PTI.

The two-hour long meeting discussed in detail the problems faced by the jute industry in the state, Subrata Gupta, chairman of the Jute Commission, who was present at the meeting, told reporters.

The West Bengal government officials assured stakeholders, represented by mill owners and members of the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), that they would take up the issue of on-dilution of mandatory packaging order with the Central Government.

The officials also said the government would explore the possibility of greater jute bag purchases by its agencies, former IJMA chairman Sanjay Kajaria said.

The government would constitute three committees to look into the diversification, training, and modernization aspects of jute mills, he added.

The Jute industry occupies an important place in the national economy of India. It is one of the major industries in the eastern region, particularly in West Bengal, which is home to 64 of the 83 composite jute mills spread across India.

Jute, the golden fibre, meets all the standards for ‘safe’ packaging in view of being a natural, renewable, biodegradable and eco-friendly product. It is estimated that that the jute industry provides direct employment to 0.37 million workers in organized mills and in diversified units including tertiary sector and allied activities and supports the livelihood of around 4.0 million farm families. In addition there are a large number of persons engaged in the trade of jute.
