Bangladesh commerce minister Tipu Munshi recently inaugurated Deshbandhu Textile Mills Ltd, a new readymade garments (RMG) factory, at the Uttara export processing zone (EPZ) under the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA). The factory would create employment for 10,000 through backward linkage industries apart from direct jobs, Munshi hoped.

Investors from 37 countries have invested $5 billion in eight EPZs run by BEPZA, according to Bangla media reports.

Nearly 5,22,000 Bangladeshis are engaged in the apparel industry out of which 66 per cent are women. The 458 operational industries of the EPZs exported goods worth $75 billion. (DS)
