The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is investing in the first carbon fibre unit of India and has recently launched Reliance Composites Solutions (RCS) to venture in the composites market. The carbon fibre unit will cater to the requirements of defence and aerospace sectors. RIL will also make high-volume and low-cost composite products.

RIL has built 3D printing capabilities of a varied range of metals and plastic products, the company stated in its annual report without revealing any details of the investment.

“RIL is building new business verticals in the sector of petrochemicals with the objective to make its presence felt in the composites market, which is worth ₹30,000 crore. It plans to manufacture enhanced elastomers and plastics, fibre reinforced composites, and graphene, which can replace steel,” the company said on its website.

Last year, RIL had purchased the assets of Kemrock Industries. RIL is now concentrating on thermoset composites such as carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (FRPs). RIL’s annual report added that an important attribute of FRPs is the capability to deliver superior strength, which is better or similar to steel, at a notably lesser weight. It further added that FRPs have a long lifespan, require less maintenance, can be moulded in any shape, and are corrosion resistant.

RIL stated in its annual report that RCS will focus on specifications and design-driven applications and markets, which have the ability to grant higher returns. The core focus areas for RCS include parts for metros and railways, and windmill blades, which have high safety and performance standards. RIL’s annual report also stated that RCS would create and control high-volume and low-cost products such as homes and modular toilets, to support the Indian government’s initiatives, which include Housing for All programme, disaster relief measures, and the Swachh Bharat Mission.
