“As brands increase the amount of information they share with Alibaba, we will be better able to protect their intellectual property,” the Chinese ecommerce giant said.
The members will also distribute among the alliance their own anti-counterfeiting expertise and data in order to bolster the efforts of the entire group.
Alibaba added that it would feed the information to brands and, ultimately, law enforcement to further support investigations and prosecutions offline.
Using algorithms, artificial intelligence and machine learning, coupled with data, Alibaba helped to shutter down 417 production rackets, arrest 332 suspects and seized fake goods valued at RMB 1.43 billion or $207.2 million in a joint operation with Chinese law enforcement authorities.
Alibaba’s anti-counterfeiting technologies scan as many as 10 million product listings a day and in the 12 months ending August 2016, the company had removed more than 380 million product listings and closed down 180,000 third-party seller stores.
“The most powerful weapon against counterfeiting today is data and analytics, and the only way we can win this war is to unite,” Alibaba’s chief platform officer Jessie Zheng said. “With our robust data capabilities, we are confident the alliance will accelerate the digital transformation in our global fight against counterfeits.” (AR)
