Higher average temperature than usual meant fewer sales of coats and other winter clothing, which led to a decrease in apparel sales at chain stores in Japan in November 2015.

Sales of apparel decreased by 5.3 per cent year-on-year to 103,209 million yen in November 2015, according to the data collected by the Japan Chain Stores Association from its 58 members that together operate 9,326 stores.

During the month, the average temperature was higher than the annual average for most parts of Japan, resulting in slowed sales of coats and other winter garments, the association said.

Menswear sales dropped 8.1 per cent year-on-year to 22,633 million yen, followed by womenswear which declined by 7.3 per cent to 30,013 million yen, while sales of other garments and accessories fell by 2.7 per cent to 50,562 million yen.

In menswear, sales were slow for coats, jackets, sweaters, suits, outerwear, casual shirts and long-sleeve poloshirts, but were up for dress shirts, fleece and sweatshirts.

In womenswear, sales were down for cut and sewn articles, jackets and pullover sweaters, whereas sales of sweatshirts, suits and cardigans were strong.

In the category of other garments and accessories, sales decreased for children's innerwear, kidswear and nightwear, but were up for rain coats and other rain goods. (RKS)
