BRC-Timewise partnership for gender diversity in retail

The British Retail Consortium (BRC) recently announced a partnership with Timewise, a leading change agent for the British flexible recruitment market, to support retailers’ efforts in improving talent attraction, retention and progression through flexible working. The partnership aims at enhancing promotion avenues of part-time workers in the retail sector.

With flexibility cited as one of the top reasons to work in the retail sector, which is the United Kingdom’s largest private sector employer employing around three million, about two-thirds of the employees work part time and the majority being women.

However, a lack of part-time opportunities in retail management roles implies many part-time workers, particularly women, are held back from career progress and higher earnings, , says a BRC press release.

A BRC study revealed last year that over 65 per cent of part-time retail employees would want to get promoted into a managerial role if offered a flexible or part time working pattern. The retail industry faces a fresh challenge from a potential skills shortage that a post-Brexit labour market may bring.

“Such collaboration is important to ensure retail remains an attractive industry to work and grow in,” BRC CEO Helen Dickinson said. (DS)
