Thai agribusiness conglomerate Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group has rebranded Tesco in Thailand to Tesco Lotus after Tesco’s parent firm in UK sold its business in Malaysia and Thailand to the CP Group for $10.6 billion last year. A new brand Tesco Lotus Express, a mini supermarket, has also been unveiled. Tesco Malaysia was renamed to Lotus Stores (Malaysia).

This marks the end of a 23-year presence of the British hypermarket chain in Thailand. Out of over 2,000 stores across the country, 400 are hypermarkets and Talad Lotus while the remaining 1,600 are mini-supermarkets.

Tesco Lotus Express showcases the smart shopping experience for the customer of today and tomorrow, while the innovations at both pilot stores have been designed to fit the new lifestyle of customers and fit their shopping experiences.

The rebranding exercise in Malaysia is expected to be over by the end of this year and the company currently employs over 8,600 employees across one head office, two distribution centres and 62 stores throughout peninsular Malaysia, the brand said on its Facebook page.
