Indian textiles minister Smriti Irani yesterday launched four silk projects in the North East through video conference in New Delhi. She inaugurated a muga silk seed production centre in Tura, Meghalaya, a silk printing and processing unit in Agartala, Tripura, an eri spun silk mill in Sangaipat, Imphal, Manipur, and a sericulture project in Mamit, Mizoram.

She also inaugurated a new office building of Weavers Service Centres (WSC) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh and in Kannur, Kerala, according to an official press release.

The Muga Silkworm Seed Production Centre (SSPC) in Tura is one of the projects taken up directly by Centre Silk Board(CSB) for implementation under Integrated Sericulture Development Project (ISDP) of the North East Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) for creation of seed infrastructure units in the north-eastern states.

The seed production capacity of the new centre is one lakh commercial disease-free-layings (dfls) per year and around 300 farmers will be directly covered.

The Agartala unit has been set up at a total cost of ₹3.71 crore for production, printing and processing of 1.5 lakh metres silk per annum. Most fabrics produced on handlooms and powerlooms in Tripura are sent to Kolkata, Bengaluru, Bhagalpur and other places for value addition through processing and printing.

The Eri Spun Silk Millin Sangaipat in Imphal East has a total cost of ₹21.53 crore and will be implemented directly by the Manipur state in coordination with CSB. Around 65 per cent of eri cocoons produced in Manipur are converted into yarn within the state through conventional spinning devices. The rest are marketed outside the state without value addition resulting in less income for farmers.

The sericulture project in the district of Mamit has a total cost of ₹11.56 crore, which includes the central government share of ₹10.82 crore. (DS)
