Tasar silk reeling machines distributed to Indian tribals

Buniyaad Tasar silk reeling machines were distributed to women reelers from tribal areas at a function organised by the Indian textiles ministry and the Central Silk Board (CSB) in New Delhi recently. The distribution was part of an effort to do away with the old practice of thigh reeling by March 2020. It will raise daily income by around 200 per cent.

The machine has been developed by the Central Silk Technological Research Institute in association with an entrepreneur from Champa in Chhattisgarh, according to an official press release.

A mobile app called e-cocoon was launched at the event for quality certification in silkworm seed sector. A compendium on Indian silk industry and state sericulture profile was also released.

Speaking on the occasion, minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj assured the textiles ministry of all support for promoting global trade of silk.

Silk production in India has increased by 41 per cent since 2013-14, textiles minister Smriti Irani said.

India is the second largest producer of silk after China and the largest consumer of silk. India's silk production capacity is expected to reach about 38,500 tonnes by 2020 from the current level of 32,000 tonnes. (DS)
