Italy’s ministries of environment and economic development recently published a strategic paper on the promotion of a circular economy, outlining government support for efficient use of resources and sustainable consumption practices. The document, ‘Towards a Circular Economy Model in Italy’, is part of a national strategy for sustainable development.

Manufacturers should take responsibility for the full lifecycle of the product and cultivate new business models to promote recovery and recycling of resources and extend product lifetime by incorporating sustainability into designs, says the document, inviting enterprises to develop consortia to manage waste.

Environmental communication plans also need to raise consumer awareness to elicit new consumption models, such as repairing instead of replacing, sharing over ownership, and recycling, according to a report on the website of London-based non-governmental organisation Climate Action Programme, which works in a contractual partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme.

The paper was accompanied by a supporting declaration signed by major Italian businesses. (DS)
