Calling it a role model for the textile industry, the jury gave the German Sustainability Award in the ‘Resource Efficiency’ category to Aquafil, for its Econyl regeneration system.

Giulio Bonazzi, CEO of Aquafil group accepted the award from Dr Michael Braungart on behalf of Aquafil.

In their statement, the jury said, “Aquafil has introduced new processes and technologies in the value chain and built new partnerships to close fibre circuits and improve resource efficiency.”

The Econyl Reclaiming Program is a global network set up in 2011 to establish fibre waste collection points.

Pre-consumer waste like oligomers, production waste, etc and post consumer waste including fishing nets, part of carpets, etc are used in the regeneration process.

Aquafil partnered the European Centre for Nature and Conservation and socks manufacturer, Starsocks to launch ‘Healthy Seas’ to collect used fishing nets from across the world.

For the Net-Works project, Aquafil is partnering US carpet manufacturer - Interface and the Zoological Society of London.

According to Aquafil, for every 10,000 tons of Econyl caprolactam produced, the saving is 70,000 barrels of oil and 42 kilo tons of Co2 emissions.

“In this way, Aquafil helps regenerate waste and help create quality products from them and thereby save precious resources like oil and also reduce carbon emissions,” it said.

Sustainability plays a major role throughout the Aqualfil group. Since 2007, greenhouse gases have been reduced by up to 25 per cent and 36 per cent of its electricity comes from renewable sources.

Aquafil said in the last three years it has collected over 30 kilo tons of waste, which otherwise would have gone in to landfills or oceans, thereby harming the environment. (AR)
