Austria-based producer of specialty viscose fibres, Lenzing AG, has won two sustainability awards this year.

The company’s spun-dyed cellulose fibre Lenzing Modal COLOR, made from beech wood, won the Austrian versions of the renowned environmental prize Energy Globe Awards on May 19, 2015. Lenzing was one of 20 nominees in the competition. The prize was accepted by Andreas Dorner, value chain manager of Lenzing AG.

At the beginning of May, Lenzing also won the CSR Newcomer Trophy from TRIGOS. Together with shoe manufacturer Legero Schuhfabrik GesmbH, Lenzing developed shoe laces made of 100 per cent Tencel which are qualitatively on par with conventional laces but also offer an outstanding ecological scorecard and are 100 per cent compostable, according to a company release.

Tencel is a lyocell fibre manufactured by Lenzing. It is of botanic origin due to the fact that it is derived from the raw material wood. The fibre production is extremely eco-friendly with the closed loop production process.

Robert van de Kerkhof, CCO of the Lenzing Group said, “All global megatrends show that sustainable business management must be the priority in the decades to come. Lenzing has been meeting these challenges for decades and is firmly committed to turning them into opportunities on the basis of its innovative strength.”

The Energy Globe Award was created by the Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann in 1999, and is the world’s most prominent environmental prize today in which 180 countries are involved. Each year awards are given for outstanding, sustainable projects focusing on resource conversation, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in order to present them to a broader public.
