Zhejiang textile dyeing may close during G20

Zhejiang province, home to about 50 per cent of textile dyeing industry in China, may shut down for few days during the G20 summit to be held later this year in Hangzhou, say Chinese media reports.

Zhejiang falls within the 300 kilometres radius of Hangzhou, where G20 summit is scheduled to be held on September 4-5, 2016. The G20 countries account for 90 per cent of world GDP and 80 per cent of world trade.

Though it is too early to conclude whether there will be a government order to shut down dyeing units during the event, there are some indications. In July 2015, Li Qiangyu of Hangzhou municipal government told in a media interview that Hangzhou government will take a leaf out of the air contamination control experience during AEPC conference and shut down some enterprises for a short period during G20 summit. However, he indicated that such a closure of contaminating units may not last for 3 months, but just a week.

Since there exists large number of dyeing enterprises, closing them for 3 months may be impossible, but shutting down for a week may be bearable, feel industry analysts.

Most Zhejiang enterprises are among small and medium enterprises which consume about 85 per cent of water resources, bear 80 per cent of energy cost, and use 65 per cent of chemical products in yarn spinning, fabric manufacturing, dyeing and readymade garment manufacturing process with heavy emissions.

In such a situation, the G20 summit may provide a perfect opportunity for reducing air pollution in Zhejiang province, say experts. (RKS)
