Sintex sets up plant to produce FRP composites in India

India-based textile major – Sintex Industries has opened a plant to manufacture fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites in Pune, Maharashtra.

This production facility will cater to large size composite products especially for farming and mining equipment, commercial vehicles and mass transit vehicles, Sintex said.

The plant was set up with direct technology transfer from its US subsidiary - Sintex Wausaukee Composite and will use Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM) and Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM) technology.

The US plant caters to companies like Catpillar, John Deere, Siemens, New Flyer, Alstom, CNH across various market segments like industrial trucks and tractors, medical imaging, mass transit and recreation vehicles.

The Pune plant is equipped with equipment like, Gelcoat spray booth, Trimming booth, Adhesive dispenser and online paint shop and its production capacity is 18,000 parts per year.

The LRTM and VARTM technology is best suited to produce large parts from 1sqmt to 5 sqmt within volumes demand up to around 10,000 parts annually with or without painting and excellent surface finish, Sintex added.
