DSM Dyneema selects Cone Denim as manufacturing partner

DSM, the producer of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMwPE), branded as Dyneema, has selected Cone Denim, a global leader in denim authenticity and innovation as its premium manufacturing partner.

The R&D collaboration opens tremendous opportunities for Cone’s expanding line of performance denims. Development efforts are being led by Cone 3D, Cone’s R&D incubator. The innovation efforts of Cone 3D are focused in the areas of performance, comfort, uniqueness, and sustainability, according to reports.

Steve Maggard, vice president for product development at Cone Denim said, “The versatility of Dyneema opens many possibilities for enhancing the strength of denim without increasing the fabric’s weight. We are just entering the beginning stages of development and are excited by the potential we see for the next generation of performance denims - stronger than ever before but with a natural, light-weight comfort.”

Noud Steffens, global segment director performance apparel at DSM Dyneema, said “Cone is recognized worldwide for its denim innovation and leadership. The partnership between DSM Dyneema and Cone lies in directly with our global growth strategy in performance apparel and allows two leaders of innovation to collaborate and explore new possibilities within cotton applications using our Dyneema fibre.”

Dyneema fibre is unique as an ultra-strong polyethylene fibre that offers maximum strength with minimum weight. It is up to 15 times stronger than steel and up to 40 per cent stronger than aramid fibres. Traditional applications include military, maritime, offshore, sailing, industrial, and cut resistant product with recent developments in apparel, specifically high performance fabrics.

Cone Denim is a leading supplier of denim fabrics to top apparel brands. The company operates as part of International Textile Group, Inc. (ITG) with manufacturing facilities in the US, Asia, and Mexico. (GK)
