BIOTEX has been one of the most talked about project in recent times. When contacted by Fibre2fashion, Jean Luprano, Section Head, Application-Specific Electronics Systems Engineering, explained that the project was initiated by a few partners, namely CSEM (the coordinator of BIOTEX), Smartex and University of Pisa, which successfully developed a sensorised shirt measuring parameters such as electrocardiogram and respiration, in the frame of WEALTHY project. The primary aim of BIOTEX is to extend the physiological measurements performed by WEALTHY with bio-sensing measurements.

Elaboration the functioning of BIOTEX clothing, Luprano said, “A shirt, comprising one or several sensing patches, will be put on by the user / patient. The system will also include wearable electronics which interfaces the sensing patches and performs the signal acquisition. Depending on the application, the system will record parameters and signals, transmit them to a close or a remote location and / or inform the user about the monitored signals. The different possible operation modes are defined by the application.”

He said that the user of these creations may be able to immediately know if something goes wrong with his health or a specific parameter. He may also be reassured if there is no problem. The wearer will in this way benefit on a lab-on-body for the measurement of some parameters.

Luprano claimed that the system had no environmental impact if usual caution is taken. He informed, “The electronics (including the battery) is designed to be reused and not disposed with the sensing patch after use. The battery has to be removed from the electronics before disposal.
