METRO Real sales brand to be equipped with RFID labels

During the CeBIT Auto ID/RFID Forum, METRO Group announced that the group-wide deployment of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in Germany will enter its next phase in 2008.

Following the successful start in October 2007, another 200 locations operated by the Real sales brand will now be equipped with RFID readers at their loading doors for incoming goods.

At the sales brand Metro Cash & Carry Germany, an average of 40% of all merchandise sold is already supplied on pallets tagged with RFID. Metro Cash & Carry is now also preparing the roll-out of the radio technology at its locations in France.

“The extension of the use of RFID at Real and Metro Cash & Carry demonstrates how the potential of RFID in retail logistics can be leveraged,” said Dr. Gerd Wolfram, Managing Director of MGI METRO Group Information Technology, while presenting the company's plans at the CeBIT trade fair.

RFID appreciably accelerates the handling of incoming goods, thus reducing truck idle times and contributing to a further optimization of the transport routes.

Thanks to the RFID labels, each pallet can be registered automatically and deliveries can be checked for completeness within seconds, thereby decisively improving the accuracy of inventory management.

RFID makes logistics more efficient – to the benefit of retailers and producers METRO Group and its IT partners support manufacturers who intend to introduce the RFID technology. Customized “Starter Kits” help companies make their first steps in deploying this innovative technology.
