GPRO Technologies Berhad (GPRO) is a leading Malaysian-based technology company that specializes in IT solutions and technologies for the industry, developing in-house software and designing the complementing hardware.

Presently, the Company is targeting garment factories in the region and in neighbouring countries like China, Indonesia, Vietnam to implement its Industrial Engineering Execution System (IEES) software at their premises within the next 12 months.

IEES is a software that helps garment producers to pre-determine the best practices that their workers should follow to achieve maximum efficiency. Further the system has the potential to transform the labour-intensive apparel sector.

Challenges in Garment Industry Today

The removal of the quota system in the developing countries especially in Asia Pacific had opened up stiff competition in this industry. For instance, producers in China are no longer required to set up another factory in other country as they can now export as much as they can produce. Therefore, the garment manufacturers are now expanding existing facilities and pushing to increase the efficiency and production rate of the garment making process. The strategy is to increase productivity and improve quality while reducing cost.

Over the last few decades, many large garment manufacturers in Hong Kong and Sri Lanka have adopted the Industrial Engineering methodologies to improve productivity and reduce cost, thus facilitating the growth of their growth. Today, these companies have expanded in size and capabilities in addition to achieving higher efficiency and productivity, enabling them to compete effectively.

In such environment, for survival sake garment factories must control international manufacturing cost by maximizing output and minimizing overheads, accurately predict cost and control profit, engineer productivity and manage output

Introduction to IESD in the Sewing Industry

Sewing industry has been a unique industry throughout the industrial history. Clothing production has resisted automation more than many other industries, as machines have so far failed to match the human hand in manipulating cloth during the sewing stage. Production remains labor intensive, and wage levels are crucial in determining the cost of the final product.

With the globalization and competition of this decade, many firms have managed to stay ahead of the market. However, all businesses have had to cut costs and raise productivity.

A production department within a sewing business is needed to produce any product efficiently, creatively and competitively. This requires a methodology to efficiently and reliably determine the time required to perform a specific task. Substantially, efficient and reliable analysis and planning tools are fundamental and essential.

Purpose and Application of IEES

Industrial Engineering Execution System (GPRO IEES) was developed with co-operation and assistance from several clothing manufacturing companies using MTM-2 (the best internationally recognized motion standard in existence), to provide a consistent, accurate and easy to optimize the process of standard time development and management of the garment production process through an industrial engineering approach. It is an analysis tool to help garment manufacturers to do more effective and efficient planning prior to production to ensure lowest cost and highest productivity.
