German specialty chemical producer and also the founder of acetylene chemistry, BASF is building a new plant for producing acetylene, with a capacity to produce 90,000 metric tons at its Ludwigshafen site in Germany. The plant which will use the world's most efficient production process will start up at the end of 2019 and replace the existing plant.

Around 20 production facilities at the Ludwigshafen site use acetylene as a raw material for many other products and are also sold to other companies producing highly elastic textile fibres, pharmaceuticals, plastics, solvents, etc.

According to BASF, the acetylene production process uses raw materials very efficiently and additionally, the heat given off during production will be used to generate energy.

“We have been working on acetylene production for more than 50 years and have continuously refined the associated processes during this time,” Dr Stefan Blank, president, intermediates division said. “Accordingly, the new plant in Ludwigshafen will use state-of-the-art technical equipment and processes.” (AR)
