The American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) has released the 16th edition of the restricted substance list (RSL), the industry’s chemical management resource for banned or restricted chemicals and substances in finished home textile, apparel, and footwear products around the world, it said on its website.

“AAFA created the RSL over eight years ago in response to the growing need to keep track of international and national regulations restricting use of certain chemicals in our products,” said Juanita D. Duggan, president and CEO of AAFA, “Today AAFA is proud to offer the industry the intelligence needed to manage a responsible, compliant supply chain on a regular, on-going basis.”

The 16th edition of the RSL covers 12 chemical categories with over 250 chemicals and is updated to reflect additions or changes to regulations and laws that restrict or ban certain chemicals in apparel, footwear, and finished home textile products. These include new standards released in China and Turkey. AAFA’s Environmental Taskforce and Peer Review teams review and update the RSL every six months, it said.

The AAFA also offers an additional online tool called the Voluntary Product Environmental Profile (“VPEPxchange”). The web-based collaboration solution is designed to assist apparel and footwear industry companies in exchanging environmental and chemical management information with their partners along the supply chain. VPEP was built in partnership with TEXbase and helps brands better communicate with their suppliers about chemical management issues. (SH)
