ASEAN designers showcase at Intl Arts & Crafts Expo
October 31, 2009 (Philippines)

Designers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are showcasing their award-winning hand-made crafts and hand-woven fabrics and textiles at the Second International Arts & Crafts Expo, which opened recently at the Philippine Trade Training Center.

This three day international expo that highlighted exclusively the hand-made as well as hand-woven products made of natural fibre is a learning and sales platform, said Dr. Mina T. Gabor, President of the ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and Development Association.

Besides displaying the products made of natural fibre there is a area within the exhibition which has been designated to sell products, which also comprises of an ASEAN fashion show of ethnic designs and motifs as well as presentations of traditional dance, music and art forms along with ASEAN food.

This expo is the part of celebration of 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibers. The UN has marked ongoing year as the International Year of Natural Fibers to spread awareness among people regarding the importance of natural fibers in income and employment generation in farming and fiber craft industry.

The expo was co-organized by the Department of Agriculture, the Philippine Tourism Authority, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Finance, and the Department of Science and Technology who are among the partners of AHPADA, which is affiliated with the ASEAN and the World Crafts Council.

Next year the expo will be organized in Thailand. Countries such as the United States, China and India, which are non-ASEAN countries, also showcased their products in the expo, informed Dr. Gabor.
