British MPs voted against a December 12 snap general election after the EU earlier agreed to offer the UK a three-month extension to the Brexit deadline, until January 31 next year. The EU offer was then formally accepted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson by informing the British Parliament, effectively postponing Brexit deadline till January 31, 2020.

PM Johnson had sent a letter addressed to European Council President Donal Tusk seeking Brexit extension until next year. In response, the EU has formally agreed to the request.

“PM Boris Johnson has now confirmed the UK’s agreement to the Brexit flextension in a letter to President Tusk. The EU27 written procedure to formalise the decision will be launched soon,” a European Council spokesperson said. 'Flextension' means that while the UK has until 31 January 2020 to leave the EU, the country could leave sooner than that if a deal is ratified.

Earlier, confirming the decision of the 27 other EU members, he tweeted, "The EU27 has agreed that it will accept the UK’s request for a flextension until 31 January 2020. The decision is expected to be formalised through a written procedure."
