Caustic soda plant being set up in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu government is building a caustic soda manufacturing plant with private participation at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam with an investment of Rs 10,000 crore. Environment impact assessment of the proposed plant has been done which has fund that it will not harm the environment. This was announced by Tamil Nadu Handlooms Minister O S Manian.

By taking this decision, the government was giving shape to an announcement by former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in the Assembly in 2015, Manian told mediapersons.

“Along with Nagapattinam district Collector S Pazhaniswamy, I inspected a few sites for the proposed plant. The location would be finalised soon,” he said, pointing out that the plant would be set up with an estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore with private sector participation.

It would provide direct and indirect employment to over 30,000 people, he said. “A detailed environment impact assessment has already been made and experts have said that the proposed plant will not cause any harm to the environment,” he said. (SV)
