CIRFS, the association representing the European man-made fibres industry, has appointed Ali Akdag as the new head of the CIRFS technical and environmental department.

He will join CIRFS on September 1st, 2015, and will take on his full responsibilities on October 1st, 2015 after a one-month handover period. He will also take on the role of secretary general of BISFA, the international organisation setting standards and test methods for man-made fibres. Akdag succeeds Bernard Defraye, who is retiring at the end of September 2015.

CIRFS director general Frédéric Van Houte said, “We welcome Ali Akdag to the CIRFS team. He has had a distinguished career in the man-made fibres industry, with senior positions in technical and management functions, and is well placed to carry the CIRFS activities forward. Dealing effectively with the rising volume of work on issues linked to sustainability and environmental responsibility, as well as carrying forward a wide range of other technical issues, is one of the most important functions of CIRFS, and I am confident that Ali will maintain the high reputation of CIRFS and its service to its member companies.”

Ali Akdag has achieved several academic degrees (including PhD) in textile technology at Manchester University in the UK. He started his career as a researcher with SASA, in Turkey, in 1984. He built up his fibre expertise in several senior assignments in research, technical manufacturing, and strategy in Turkey, according to a press release.

More recently he shared his expertise as a lecturer at Cukorova University and as an industrial consultant at USAM (Adana University and Industry Joint R&D Centre Organisation).

CIRFS is the association for Europe's € 10 billion man-made fibres industry, representing the industry to the European authorities and providing the industry with a wide range of services. Its members cover almost 85 per cent of European man-made fibres output. (GK)
