Colombo's decision on Eravur fabric processing park hailed

The Sri Lankan cabinet’s decision to set up a fabric processing park in Eravur as a strategic development project under the ministry of industries has been welcomed by the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF), the apex body of the apparel industry in the country. The 275-acre plot located in the Batticaloa district will be a dedicated fabric processing zone.

Sri Lanka imported 255,437 metric tonnes (MT) of fabric both for export-oriented apparel manufacturers and domestic consumption in 2019 spending $2.2 billion. The park will help reduce such fabric import, according to media reports in the country.

There are seven textile mills manufacturing fabric for export-oriented units. Daily output of these mills is around 175 MT and this is vital part component in the building the industry value addition to over 52 per cent even after accounting for the yarn imports of the local mills. Sales from these seven fabric mills to the registered apparel exporting companies amounted $499 million in 2019.

Five new companies have expressed interest to set up textile plants in the new zone.

Construction in the new zone is scheduled to commence early next year and by early 2022, production from the new mills will commence.
