Cotton Incorporated unveils new 'Focus on Cotton' webcast

Cotton Incorporated, the research company representing upland cotton, funded by US growers of upland cotton and importers of cotton and cotton textile products, has launched a new 'Focus on Cotton' webcast: 'Impact of Leaf Pubescence on Fibre Quality', by Gaylon D. Morgan, Ph.D., professor from the State Ext. Cotton Agronomist, Texas A&M University.
The 22-minute talk by Gaylon provides information that helps users understand how genetics and environment impact plant traits, identify practices that significantly influence leaf grade values, and schedule harvests during optimal conditions.
The new webcast helps cotton growers, consultants, and other industry experts identify factors contributing to higher cotton lead grade values. The presentation will help consultants, growers, and other practitioners throughout the Cotton Belt to identify factors contributing to higher cotton leaf grade values.
Cotton fibre quality has become much important over the past 10-15 years with over 85 per cent of the US cotton being exported. Contamination of the cotton lint by leaf and bract material, quantified as leaf grade value by the HVI analysis, is one fibre quality measurement where cotton producers are receiving significant price discounts in some years. Previous research has shown that numerous factors contribute to the leaf grade values; however, it is difficult to link anyone specific factor directly to higher leaf grade values. The cotton plant characteristics, different harvest-aid scenarios, and environmental factors are discussed in the presentation. (GK)
