Crystal joins Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action

Crystal has signed the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action (the “Charter”) under the United Nations Climate Change in Oct 2020. Crystal, based in Hong Kong, has a diversified product categories into five segments, namely lifestyle wear, denim, intimate, sweater, and sportswear, and outdoor apparel, with leading positions in corresponding categories.

Crystal has joined hands with around 150 signatories and supporting organisations, including leading brands, companies and organisations in the apparel and fashion sector, to commit to reducing 30 per cent aggregate GHG emissions by 2030 and setting a decarbonisation pathway for the fashion industry drawing on methodologies from the science-based targets initiative.

By joining the Charter, Crystal is affirmed to support the commitments initiated by the Charter, which is an industry-wide initiative to move towards a holistic commitment to climate action. In addition to the reduction of GHG emissions and the development of decarbonisation pathway, other commitments include pursuing energy efficiency measures and renewable energy, moving towards circular business models, tracking and reporting GHG emissions consistent with standards, the company said in a press release.

“It is time for the fashion industry to step up climate actions collaboratively aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement. We are keen to set an example for others and show our determination to combat climate change. We will engage actively in developing and enhancing the climate action agenda,” Catherine Chiu, general manager of corporate quality and sustainability department of Crystal said.

Being one of the signatories, Crystal is dedicated to working collaboratively with around 150 signatories and supporting organisations to address climate impact globally by following the principles enshrined. By participating actively in the Working Group 1 ‘Decarbonisation and GHG Emission Reductions’, and Working Group 3 ‘Manufacturing/ Energy’, Crystal targets to develop a practical climate strategy and create a decarbonisation pathway for the industry. Crystal will share best practices and tools and shape the climate change policy agenda with other industry peers, while stepping up to enhance capacity to counter climate challenges and contribute actively to the global climate solution.

Crystal has been working relentlessly to reduce carbon emission under the third Global 5-year Sustainability Targets and planning to tackle climate risk holistically. In 2020, the Company completed a study to develop a roadmap for long-term carbon reduction. In 2019, a rooftop solar energy system consisting of around 600kW was installed in the intimate factory in Vietnam, anticipating to reduce the emissions by approximately 500 tCO2e every year. Crystal International plans to progressively scale up the adoption of renewable energy in all operating countries in the foreseeable future.
