Textile institute to increase seats & infuse skilled faculty
September 15, 2008 (India)

Uttar Pradesh Textile Technology Institute (UPTTI), one of the oldest textile technology centers in the state is all set to get its infrastructure revamped and overcome its present faculty crunch. In fact, the management has also proposed to double the present number of seats.

Sources from the institute informed Fibre2fashion that at a recent finance committee meeting of the institute, a proposal to refurbish the seventy year old crumpling hostel that accommodates 180 students was put forward before the Government for meeting the lodging needs of the increasing number of students.

It has been reported that a total of Rs30 million have been allocated for renovation purpose and prospect for developing separate electricity feeder to ensure constant power supply to the institute and hostels is also being considered. It is said that the hostels would have a broadband internet connectivity to facilitate the project work.

What aroused concern among the institute’s management was that there was a serious paucity of trained manpower in the designing and production departments of textile mills which compelled mill authorities to employ inept staff. The decision to increase the number of seats aims at having trained professionals who can be easily absorbed in the industry.

Although the institute presently offers graduate and post graduate engineering courses in textile technology (40 seats), textile chemistry (20 seats) and man-made fibre technology (30 seats) as well as hosts 40 seats at post graduate level, the required faculty for almost all the departments is found to be wanting in required numbers.

Situation is so grim that the textile engineering department alone demands seven professors and lecturers, while the key administrative posts of vice-chancellor (VC) and financial officer (FO) are being occupied by temporary staff members.

As part of temporary measures, the institute is hiring guest faculty to make up for the faculty famine while simultaneous arrangements are being undertaken to make new recruitments in the shortest possible time. The institute is also hoping that a hike in pay scale for new professors would help make teaching an attractive profession.

No measures are being discounted in ensuring that the institute gains its lost glory as a world class textile training center.
